SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES AND LOVED ONES NAVIGATING THE RECOVERY JOURNEY

The Byron Private Family Therapy Program offers structured support for families and loved ones of adults receiving residential treatment at Byron Private. If someone close to you is entering or considering our program, this is for you.

By the time most families reach out, they have already given a great deal. You may feel exhausted, uncertain about what comes next, or unsure whether there is any space left for your own needs. That is a reasonable place to be. Byron Private works with families throughout the residential program, through therapy sessions, education, and direct contact with the clinical team. Support for your family is not an afterthought. It is a deliberate part of how we approach recovery.

Family involvement looks different for every family. What we offer is shaped around your specific circumstances, your relationship with the person in treatment, and what is most helpful at each stage of their care.

A Family Therapy Program Designed To Support Recovery

The family therapy program supports partners, parents, siblings, adult children, and close loved ones of adults receiving residential treatment at Byron Private. You do not need to be a primary carer to be involved — if this person matters to you, there is a place for you here.

Families arrive at different points. Some have been managing a loved one’s mental health or addiction challenges for years. Others are only now confronting the full extent of what has been happening. Either way, your own experience, and your own wellbeing, deserve attention.

When a family is actively involved in the recovery process, the outcomes tend to be better — for the person in treatment and for the people around them. Family participation is not a formality. It is genuinely part of how lasting recovery takes hold.

How Our Family Therapy Program Is Structured

How Family Therapy Works at Byron Private

Family therapy at Byron Private is integrated into the residential treatment program, not delivered as a separate service. Families participate in sessions designed to improve understanding, rebuild trust, and develop healthier patterns of relating, in a supported, clinical environment.

Sessions are facilitated by experienced clinicians and may involve one or more family members. The format and frequency are shaped around the needs of the person in treatment and the circumstances of each family.

Family therapy is not about assigning blame or identifying fault. It is about creating space for honest, supported communication and building the skills that sustain recovery well beyond the residential program.

Support Tailored To Your Family's Situation

Every family arrives with a different history, and no two experiences of supporting someone through addiction or mental health challenges are the same. Byron Private does not apply a standard model.

Family support is shaped by clinical assessment, the goals of the person in treatment, and what each family member is ready and able to engage with. The level and type of involvement can evolve as the program progresses.

Our approach recognises that family members are not simply support networks. They are people carrying their own stress, grief, and uncertainty — and that deserves its own clinical attention.

Continuity of Support Beyond Residential Treatment

Recovery does not end when residential treatment does, and neither does the role of the family. Byron Private’s approach to family therapy includes forward planning, helping families understand what to expect and how to support their loved one as they return to daily life.

Where relevant, our clinical team can connect families with ongoing support resources, including counsellors, peer support, and community organisations, so that families are not left to manage alone after treatment ends.

Families who engage meaningfully in the recovery process tend to have better long-term outcomes, both for themselves and for the person they care about.

What To Expect From Our Family Therapy Program

Family involvement at Byron Private typically begins during the intake process. Our team will speak with you early to understand the broader picture, answer your questions, and begin building a picture of what support will be most useful.

As treatment progresses, family therapy sessions are arranged at clinically appropriate intervals. These may be conducted in person at our Byron Bay hinterland facility or via telehealth, depending on your location and circumstances.

Between sessions, our intake and care coordination team is available to support you with questions, provide psychoeducation about what your loved one is working through, and help you understand how to engage with their recovery in a way that is helpful.

Each family’s experience is different. Some family members attend a small number of sessions; others are involved throughout the program. What matters most is that the support is meaningful and well-timed for everyone involved.

Who is this For?

Support For Families And Loved Ones Of People In Treatment

The family therapy program is available to family members and close loved ones of adults receiving residential treatment at Byron Private. This includes partners, parents, siblings, adult children, and close friends who are significantly involved in the person’s life.

You do not need to be in crisis to reach out. Some family members come in feeling completely overwhelmed. Others arrive simply wanting to understand what their loved one is going through and how to help. Both are valid starting points.

If you are unsure whether family therapy is appropriate for your situation, or how involved you should be in your loved one’s treatment, our team can talk that through with you before any decisions are made.

Deciding to seek support for yourself, alongside a loved one’s treatment, can feel unfamiliar — or even uncomfortable. You do not need to have it worked out before you call. A conversation with our team is confidential and there is no pressure. We can listen, answer your questions, and help you understand what might be most helpful.

Reaching out on behalf of someone you love, or for yourself, takes courage. You do not need to know exactly what you are looking for. Our team can help you understand the right next step.
