Byron Private
Veteran Rehab & DVA Support
VETERANS AND ADF MEMBERS CAN SPEAK CONFIDENTIALLY WITH OUR INTAKE TEAM ABOUT TREATMENT OPTIONS AND DVA SUPPORT.
ANZAC Day is a time of reflection for many Australians. For veterans, it can also bring a period of heightened distress, memories of lost colleagues, the weight of survival, and the lasting effects of service that don’t follow a calendar. If this time of year feels harder than usual, you’re not alone.
Byron Private has been supporting veterans through residential rehab for over ten years, working with people navigating addiction, trauma and PTSD, and co-occurring mental health conditions in a setting away from institutional clinical environments.
Our intake team can talk through what you’re experiencing, explain what the residential program involves, and help you understand whether Byron Private is the right clinical fit.

Residential Rehab for Veterans in the Byron Bay Hinterland
The DVA’s Transition and Wellbeing Research Programme found that 46% of transitioned ADF members met criteria for a lifetime anxiety disorder, and one in four met criteria for PTSD specifically. For many, those conditions don’t appear alone. PTSD and trauma alongside alcohol use disorder or drug dependency is a common presentation among veterans seeking rehab, and one that residential treatment is better placed to address than outpatient support alone.
Byron Private is a residential treatment program set in the peaceful hinterland of Byron Bay. Our approach combines personalised one-on-one therapy with the support of a small, close-knit group.
For veterans who may have spent time in hospital settings, our environment offers something different. Surrounded by four acres of green space and close to the beach, the setting is calm, restorative, and intentionally non-clinical. With daily beach visits and a relaxed atmosphere, the program supports recovery in a way that feels safe, grounding, and far removed from a traditional ward environment
The program runs up to 12 residents at any one time, in a mixed group rather than a veterans-only cohort. For many people, that peer diversity is part of what makes the transition back into civilian life feel more grounded.

How Our Program Is Structured
Psychiatrist-Led From Day One
An onsite psychiatrist conducts a full diagnostic review, and where relevant, a medication review, within your first week. For veterans presenting with PTSD, trauma, or co-occurring addiction and mental health conditions, this level of medical oversight is not commonly available at this price point in residential rehab.
If medically supervised withdrawal is needed, it’s managed onsite with 24/7 nursing support.
A Program Built Around Your History
Treatment planning is informed by a comprehensive clinical assessment in your first week and reviewed as your stay progresses. The program includes daily group therapy and individual therapy sessions twice a week.
For veterans seeking rehab for PTSD, trauma, or alcohol use disorder, treatment at Byron Private can include Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for trauma, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Exposure Therapy, alongside complementary therapies including yoga, equine therapy, eco-therapy, and naturopathy.
Support That Continues After Discharge
A personalised 12-month aftercare plan is developed during your stay, with regular clinical check-ins post-discharge. Family members can also be involved during the program — Byron Private offers family sessions designed to support relationship repair alongside the individual clinical work.
Forward planning is built into the program from the start.

What To Expect When You Contact Us
When you get in touch, you’ll speak with someone from the intake team. That first call is about understanding your situation, what you’re experiencing, what you’ve tried, and what you’re looking for. Whether Byron Private is the right clinical fit will be assessed honestly.
Family members sometimes contact us on behalf of a veteran who isn’t ready yet. That’s fine, and the team can talk through the situation and what options may exist.
DVA funding for residential rehab requires individual approval, and most veterans will need to demonstrate they’ve explored other treatment options first. If you contact our intake team, they can give you an honest picture of whether Byron Private is likely to be a clinical fit and what the process looks like from there.
Who is this For?
Veterans, ADF Personnel, and Family Members Considering Veteran Rehabilitation
This page is for veterans and current or former ADF members considering residential rehab for addiction, trauma, PTSD, or co-occurring mental health challenges, and for family members trying to work out what’s available.
DVA funding for residential treatment involves an individual approval process. Most veterans will need to demonstrate they’ve explored other treatment options before DVA will fund a residential program, and we’ll be clear about what that process looks like for your specific situation from the first call.
We will tell you what the program involves, whether it’s likely to be a clinical fit, and what to expect from the DVA pathway from here. If Byron Private isn’t the right option, we’ll say so.

Accessing veteran rehab involves more steps than a standard referral. The Byron Private intake team can help you understand whether the program is a clinical fit and what the DVA process involves from here.
