When Outpatient Support Isn't Enough

Byron Private is a private residential mental health facility in the Byron Bay hinterland - psychiatrist-led, NSQHS accredited, with a maximum of 12 residents. Many people who arrive have been managing their mental health for a long time, with outpatient therapy, medication, or periods of time off. Progress has been made, but day-to-day functioning is still affected. For some, it shows up like this:

- Difficulty getting through the day despite trying

- Previous therapy or medication has helped, but not enough

- Work, relationships, or basic routines are being affected

- Periods of feeling okay followed by setbacks

- Physical symptoms - poor sleep, fatigue, difficulty concentrating

- Loved ones are worried but you're not sure where to turn

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone, and you don't have to keep managing it on your own.

Why Residential Mental Health Treatment Works Differently

Outpatient therapy and medication can help a lot of people but for some, they're not enough on their own. That's what Byron Private is here for.

A residential mental health program removes you, or your loved one, from the environment where symptoms are being managed day to day. Consistent clinical structure, a small peer community, and 24/7 support create conditions that weekly sessions can't replicate.

Byron Private's program runs for 4–6 weeks. The setting, the routine, and the peer group are all part of a holistic approach to recovery, and it's what makes residential treatment different to outpatient support.

Byron Private supports adults managing one or more of the following:

Depression

Trauma

Anxiety

PTSD

Stress & Burnout

Alcohol Use

Substance Use

How Byron Private approaches mental health treatment

Byron Private's mental health residential treatment program is psychiatrist-led and built around each resident's individual history and goals. Every program begins with a full psychiatric review in the first week.

Clinical approach

Within the first week, the treating psychiatrist conducts a full diagnostic review and develops a personalised clinical plan - covering diagnosis, medication, and therapeutic approach. Individual psychotherapy, trauma-informed care, and daily group therapy form the core clinical structure throughout the stay.

Program Structure

The program runs within a Modified Therapeutic Community model - daily group therapy, individual therapy sessions twice weekly, and complementary therapies including yoga, equine therapy, eco-therapy, naturopathy, personal training, art therapy, and music therapy. Family sessions are available throughout the residential stay. Nutritious meals are prepared by an onsite chef.

Every element of the program is designed to treat the whole person, not just the presenting condition. A personalised aftercare plan is developed during the stay, with regular check-ins after the program ends.

The setting is part of the program

Byron Private sits in the Byron Bay hinterland, 10 minutes from the coast, removed from the routines and pressures of daily life. The natural environment is part of how the program works. Daily structure includes beach trips, yoga, and eco-therapy alongside clinical sessions.

Stepping out of your usual environment creates space that's difficult to access in day-to-day life, and it's why residential treatment works differently to outpatient support.

Support beyond the residential program

Recovery does not end when the residential program does. Each resident works with the clinical team during their stay to build a personalised aftercare plan that reflects their specific history, goals, and circumstances.

After the program ends, regular check-ins provide ongoing support through the transition back to daily life. What comes next looks different for everyone. The plan is built to reflect that.

What is a residential mental health facility?

A residential mental health facility provides structured, live-in treatment for adults experiencing mental health challenges. Unlike outpatient therapy, residents live on-site for the duration of their program – typically 4–6 weeks, with access to a clinical team, daily therapeutic structure, and 24/7 support. Byron Private is a privately operated residential mental health facility in the Byron Bay hinterland.

Is Byron Private the right fit?

Byron Private is best suited to adults who are medically stable and ready to engage with a structured residential program. It’s not an acute psychiatric unit – the program works within a supported community setting, not a clinical ward. If you’re unsure, the intake team can help clarify whether the program is right for your situation. Pre-arrival screening is part of the intake process, and if Byron Private isn’t the right fit, the team will assist with a referral to a more appropriate service.

How is Byron Private different to a psychiatric hospital?

Byron Private is not a hospital. It’s a private residential facility – meaning no private health insurance is required, no GP referral is needed to enquire, and the environment is a small community setting rather than a clinical ward. The program is psychiatrist-led with hospital-grade NSQHS accreditation, but the experience is deliberately different to a psychiatric hospital setting.

What mental health conditions does Byron Private treat?

Byron Private supports adults managing depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, stress and burnout, and co-occurring substance use. Many people present with a combination of conditions – the program is designed to address the whole picture, not just the primary diagnosis.

Do I need a GP referral to enquire?

No referral is required to contact the intake team or make an enquiry. A clinical assessment is part of the intake process and will be arranged prior to admission.

How long is the residential mental health program?

Programs typically run for 4–6 weeks. Length of stay is determined through clinical assessment prior to arrival and may be reviewed during the program based on progress and clinical need.

Can I use superannuation to fund treatment?

Yes – superannuation may be accessible via Release My Super, subject to eligibility conditions. The intake team can explain the process and what documentation is typically required. DVA funding is also available subject to individual approval.
